The process and rationale for the creation of map art as a beautiful tool for Zunis to learn Zuni place names will be described in a small exhibit at the AAMHC hopefully in the summer of 2007. Zuni Firefighters A Zuni Forest Firefighter exhibit has been in the planning for over a year. The concepts for the exhibit are still emerging and will require more local discussion and fund raising. Zunis began organized wildland firefighting in the 1950s while a group of Zunis were working as contracted laborers at Texas Canyon in the Angeles National Forest near Los Angeles. Contacts with former and current U.S. Forest Service personnel with knowledge of the early history of Zuni firefighters has been made as part of the information gathering for the exhibit. We hope to develop this exhibit in late 2007 or early 2008. Zuni Jewelry Staff of the AAMHC has been meeting with staff of the Ohio University Kennedy Museum of Art to plan an OU exhibit about Zuni jewelry. The Kennedy Museum of Art has a remarkable Zuni jewelry collection representing important styles and individual artists and collaborative pieces. The AAMHC may obtain parts of the exhibit for a local exhibit about the period when collaborative jewelry making was common among Zuni jewelry makers. |
